Career Opportunities

Graduates from the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences enjoy a wealth of exciting career opportunities in academia, industry and government. Many of our BS, BS/MS, MS graduates have pursued advanced degrees, such as the Pharm.D., M.D., and the Ph.D., or have joined the pharmaceutical industry as research scientists. Our Ph.D. graduates have obtained dynamic and rewarding scientific and managerial positions with the pharmaceutical industry, university academia or the federal government. The “Buffalo product” is well known and widely acclaimed for his/her rigorous and comprehensive scientific training.

Career Opportunities within the Pharmaceutical Industry

UB Pharmaceutical Science graduates are highly sought after by the pharmaceutical industry—approximately 90 percent of our graduates obtain employment in the pharmaceutical industry, with the other 10 percent going on to graduate school.

Employment Areas

Pharmaceutical Sciences graduates may find opportunities in university, hospital or pharmaceutical industry settings as scientists in:

  • bioanalysis
  • drug delivery
  • drug metabolism
  • pharmacokinetics
  • pharmacometrics
  • pharmacogenetics
  • drug analysts
  • manufacturing / production technologists
  • marketing/sales drug detail representatives
or pursue graduate studies leading to the M.D., D.D.S., B.S.-M.S., M.S. or Ph.D. degrees.

Pharmaceutical Sciences / Pharmacy Degree Flexibility

The breadth and depth of the program prepares graduates for a wide range of career opportunities. Pharmaceutics-major graduates may find opportunities in university, hospital, or pharmaceutical industry settings as research associates (in bioanalysis, drug delivery, drug metabolism, and pharmacokinetics), drug analysts, manufacturing/production technologists, and marketing/sales drug detail representatives. The Pharmaceutical Sciences program prepares students to work in over 10 career areas within the pharmaceutical industry! This is second only to a Chemistry degree!

Some of these areas are:

  • Drug discovery
  • Pharmaceutical formulations
  • Package development
  • Clinical manufacturing / process improvement
  • Physical and analytical chemistry / drug analysis
  • Clinical research
  • Pharmacokinetics and metabolism
  • Drug safety and surveillance
  • Regulatory affairs
  • Licensing
Our PhD graduates receive multiple offers from major research pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer, Merck, Lilly, etc. Other graduates have accepted academic posts and government positions (e.g., FDA).
Ph.D. graduates of the department are highly sought after by research laboratories in academia, government and the pharmaceutical industry.
