Message from the Dean

dean (11K)How does a building help shape the future? That depends on the foundation upon which it is built—namely, the progress of the activity inside.

Our tradition of excellence began in 1886 and, for more than a century, our school has built a reputation for professionalism, leadership, and innovation. During this time our faculty and graduates have made a significant impact in the evolution of pharmacy practice and the underlying science.

We have reached another defining point in our future. The space where it will be realized, John Kapoor Hall on the South Campus, will be completed by 2012. The building will serve to prepare new generations of students to meet the constantly changing demands of pharmacy practice. It will provide a special place where education, training and improved patient care will flourish, and interprofessional research collaboration will advance groundbreaking discoveries.

The school’s new home on the health-sciences campus will have considerable impact in a number of key areas. This state-of-the-art facility will help attract and retain outstanding faculty and students. It will respond to the increased demand in the market for the highly trained graduates in our PharmD and pharmaceutical sciences programs. The school’s new location will better prepare the health care workforce of tomorrow with an increased concentration in areas of professional practice that improve the quality of health care. It will also help address the pharmacist shortage in the U.S. as it meets the needs of an aging population, advances in pharmacotherapeutics, and medication therapy management.

The move also will bring our school together with the other health sciences schools – medicine and biomedical sciences, dental medicine, public health and health professions, and nursing – to create a united Academic Health Center on the South Campus, offering students a comprehensive interprofessional education, practice and interdisciplinary research. With a new facility to accommodate the next generation of pharmacists, clinicians, and pharmaceutical scientists, the opportunity is at hand to enrich the health care team approach to pharmacy education and patient care.

We eagerly anticipate our move to John Kapoor Hall, where we will continue to provide a rich future for a school whose students go on to become innovators, guiding and shaping the future of health care in academia, government, and at world renowned companies. Our new home will help further the research to create and maintain a body of knowledge needed for professional education, health care delivery, and the advancement of science.

I invite you to join us on this exciting journey of discovery where you have an opportunity to make a difference. At this defining point in our school’s history, your support will make a far-reaching impact now and for generations to come.

Wayne K. Anderson, Ph.D.
Dean, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

Designed by the S/L/A/M Collaborative, the new building represents the first time in the school’s 120-year history in which it will be housed in space designed specifically for its needs and anticipated growth. It will promote the advancement of innovative patient care and research through:

  • Pharmaceutical care laboratories for patient counseling, robotics, medical error prevention, pharmacy informatics, sterile production preparation, and compounding
  • Learning environments that represent contemporary pharmacy practice and research environments
  • Laboratories that accommodate state-of-the-art technologies in research and education
  • Classrooms that use the latest technology in student meeting areas and learning facilities
  • Audio and video conference facilities that allow for real-time interaction with on-campus and national/international off-campus sites
  • An expanded museum and exhibition areas to showcase the profession’s rich history
